stand up NYC raises $12k against anti-LGBTQ+ violence
Drag artist Julie J and nightlife producer Aaron Hock team up for the third installment of Stand Up NYC, an emergency response event fighting back against anti-LGBTQ+ violence. The intention of the event was to raise money for the memorial funds of O’Shae Sibley, who was recently stabbed to death in a Brooklyn gas station, DeAndre Matthews who was shot and burned in February of this year, Mary Mora whose cause of death is still unknown due to a botched investigation, and NYC Anti-Violence Project that serves “NYC’s LGBTQ & HIV-affected communities through free counseling, legal services, organizing & advocacy.“
The third Stand Up NYC raised $11,911.22 bringing the combined gross of all three benefits to $74,930 in less than six months. The organizations supported in the past include ACLU of Tennessee, Black Trans Liberation, Trans Formations Project, Trans Legal Defense and Education Fund, Black Trans Femmes in the Arts, and Southern Trans Youth Emergency Project.

Merrie Cherry dedicates a tearful speech to the recently passed Babes Trust, who was a co-founder of the east coast’s biggest drag festival Bushwig. “I hear the word icon thrown around a lot and it’s for fun, live it, live your fantasy. But Babes Trust . . . she was a true icon,“ says Merrie Cherry. “She really was a star and she wanted to highlight people, but she just had something that made you feel special every time she was around you. And I just want everyone to know that the things, the decisions she made in life for the past 15 years are why we are here right now.“
