honoring digital arts with rhizome and new museum
On Wednesday night, New Museum held an annual benefit in affiliation with Rhizome, a non-profit art organization that champions born-digital art and culture. New Museum’s Toby Devan Lewis Director, Lisa Phillips, and Rhizome’s founder, artist Mark Tribe, were recognized at the benefit for fostering the partnership that began in 2003.
“Generative art is a core thematic focus of the evening, with three artist honorees-Rafaël Rozendaal, Lillian Schwartz, and Ix Shells--that use computation as a central aspect of their creative practice. The benefit inaugurates a new partnership with TRLab in support of Rhizome's work in the generative art field, including archival efforts and artist commissions,” says New Museum in their post about the event.

Rhizome asked artist Damjanski to create a physical award that they could present to the artists and honorees, but what they received was half of an award that is activated by a digital component. In these photos, Damjanski showcases how the awards would look when scanned by a smartphone.
